Take Action!

Grey Route has been cancelled. Now is the time to show there are better solutions such as the Arundel Alternative.

Please share your views with your MP. Here are some key points that you could include (please use your own words):

  1. Say that you object to an offline bypass altogether, and why.

  2. Any offline bypass, either through the National Park or outside of the park boundary would ruin the villages of Tortington and Binsted, cause more traffic in Walberton and Fontwell, ruin the river Arun walks and the setting of Arundel, and sever a huge, important wildlife area.

  3. Any offline bypass would bring nothing but more peak traffic and more congestion to Worthing, Chichester and villages and towns in between.

  4. More moderate online improvements, like the Arundel Alternative are more affordable and could ease flow without increasing traffic at Chichester or Worthing.

  5. National Highways’ top range estimate figure for Grey Route was £1.2. NH spent £85m on developing Grey Route. This is not the best use of that much public money when there are other higher priority needs.

  6. Building an offline bypass would incur an enormous carbon footprint in construction, and in its use it would encourage people to take longer, faster and more frequent car journeys. This is not compatible with government and global net zero objectives.

  7. Describe what you would lose personally if an offline bypass were built.

  8. Include your fears about the climate emergency, flooding, loss of rare or favourite wildlife, ecological crisis, your love of local nature, history of the landscape, favourite walks.

  9. Waste of money, impacts on local homes, communities and business.

  10. Lack of public transport or cycle facilities and domination of cars.

‘Offline’ bypasses run independently to the existing road, ‘online’ improvements such as the Arundel Alternative run along the existing route.
